Protecting Your Energy

“Energy is your most precious human resource.” - Susannah Seton

Most of us are barraged by some kind of “bad” energy every day, whether it’s from traumatic news stories, mean classmates and coworkers, or just scrolling through our social media feed, food, and exercise, also our thoughts, emotions, and interactions with others affects our energy and our energetic field. It’s never easy to be around negativism. But beyond that, it can be quite toxic and detrimental, fostering a mindset of cynicism, fatalism, and even defeatism.

“How do I protect my energy from negative people and situations?

  • Take care of yourself. You can’t care for others if you can’t care for yourself. It is not selfish or vain to love yourself, take care of yourself, or to make your happiness a priority. Learning and practicing self-care will help keep you grounded and strong when you’re faced with negative energy.
  • Find the optimistic viewpoint in a negative situation- Negative energy is draining and sadly, it’s all around us but keeping a positive vibe does so much.
  • Stop trying to fix everyone and everything. If you find yourself doing for other things that they could and should be doing for themselves, you’re not helping but enabling. Sometimes we can unintentionally produce negative energy by carrying people when they know how to walk, or we try to fix people when they weren’t broken, to begin with. Learn when to stay clear.
  • Learn to say no- We often agree on things we don’t want to do because it has become a pattern in our lives. Saying no is not hard to do, and it’s even easier if you practice. It’s not unusual to feel awkward and pretty awful right before you say “no.” But those feelings won’t last long because after, it’s not that a load will suddenly lift from your shoulders, it’s that a load won’t land on them, and that feels good.

  • Add value and positivity to someone else’s life- What you give them and how you treat them is what you’ll get back. And the way you treat others and how you think of them also tend to have a big effect on how you treat and think about yourself. Not from everyone. And not every time, but what you send out there matters a whole lot.
  • Surround yourself with good vibes. This can be your friends who just get you, people or places with great energy, or just doing things that make you feel good.

So don't let anyone mess with your flow, keep the positive energy going.
