How to wear dark lipstick like a Pro

Wearing dark lipstick can be intimidating. But it can also be pretty empowering. I personally do a purple and dark pink lip to give me a darker lip shade or a wine color and a little purple shade.
Dark lipstick isn’t just for goth fans! Everyone is brimming with dark lips in an array of shades from juicy berry and ruby reds to deep plums and burgundy wines.

But the key to rocking the brooding, dark lip starts with choosing the right color for your complexion. Go dark but no so dark that it looks scary.

Generally, wine red, burgundy and deep plum. It’s advisable to avoid deep purples and blackened reds because they can make your skin look to sallow and the contrast too stark. When wear a bold dark color like this keep the eye makeup super simple. May just a hint of color and lots of mascara to balance it all out.

Choosing the right finish is important as well. Matte finish lipsticks look more polished and understated while Glossy lipsticks look more glamorous but draw attention. So if dark lipsticks are a new territory for you, stick to a matte or satin finish. Its my personal favorite lip shade for the season.. i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if you're new to the world of vampy lipstick, Here are some tips to help you pull off a dark lip. And don't worry: If you're still not quite ready to dive into the world of blackened plums and bruised berries, you can always start with some sheerer options to become more adjusted to the look.

  • It is a must to use a lip liner when wearing dark colors, it has a twofold purpose. Filling in the entire lip with liner creates a good base for lip color that won’t run. Dark colors contrast with the surrounding skin, so a liner is also essential for creating a crisp, clean edge. Also, don’t apply your liner after your lip color. It may glide on easily but it won’t do anything to prevent running.
  • Choose a lipstick that has a matte or opaque cream finish to make the dark color look clean and deliberate. Transparent finishes tend to fade quickly, look patchy and give the appearance of a messy application.
  • To avoid looking overdone, balance out your entire makeup look. Dark lips look best with groomed, well-defined brows, minimal eye makeup and soft cheeks. Let your lips be the statement and focus of the look.
  • If your dark lip is washing out the rest of your face, sweep on some extra blush or bronzer to brighten up your complexion.
  • To keep dark lips looking perfect, dab on a little bit of your foundation powder around the edge of your lips. Use a small flat shadow brush or cotton swab for precise application.
  • It’s good to branch out and try a variety of different colors to find the one that is most flattering. Pink-based lipsticks complement fair skintones, while a blue-based option is best for medium skintones and makes teeth look whiter.
  • Consider maintenance: Use a straw for beverages to prevent lipstick from wearing off in the center of the lip. Also, be careful of applying lip gloss over a dark lip if you are concerned about longevity. Lip gloss tends to break down lip color rather quickly.
  •   And perhaps the most important tip (in addition to carrying your lipstick with you for touch-ups), is to be confident. Besides the fact that deep berries and reds are some of the most universally-flattering shades, if you appear confident in your lip color (and yourself), no one will question you. Because, yeah, you're totally pulling it off.
